“Chapala Celebrates Tourist Zone Revival !”
Jalisco Governor Emilio Marquez hopes to attend the inaugural ceremonies that will start the festivities on Wednesday, July 30, 2008 marking the completion of work along the western portion of Lake Chapala’s Malecon.
The inaugural celebrations are to start at 11 a.m. and will include two bands and a water skiing show in the bay west of the pier.
The conclusion of the waterfront’s renovation is a “dream come true” for local officials and all of us who live in the area as well.
The mayor and other dignitaries will gather at the west end of the Malecon to inaugurate the new tourist information module and the tented plaza built on the old site of the Chapala post office.
The plan then calls for the the officials to take a walk along the now beautiful promenade.
The next phase of the reconstruction project calls for the construction of tourist office which will do double duty as the Tourist Police HQ.
The renovation projects are being paid for from various funds including the Jalisco State Government to the tune 3.5 million pesos from its Strategic Projects program.
Three million pesos came from a spending package for urban image improvements totaling 4.5 million pesos which was divided by equally among the federal, state and municipal governments.
The rest of the 1.5 million pesos is earmarked for improving the highway area running through the commercial strip in San Antonio Tlayacapan.
Jalisco has authorized an additional eight-million-pesos for the second, and local officials are hoping for an additional 5.3 million pesos to finish the project in style.
