Are Improvements Coming for Ajijic Waterfront?
July 16, 2008

A unanimous vote by the Chapala city council this week gave Mayor Gerardo Degollado a green light to approach the state government for funding to develop a Malecon along Ajijic’s waterfront.
The area to be developed starts at the Ajijic pier and goes West to the Park along the waterfront and will have a 2 block long promenade. Existing pathways will also be improved along Amistad Park (Friendship Park).
Chapala Mayor Degollado explains that the project is still in the planning stages but that the plans will be completed in about one month.
The plans call for the renovated Ajijic waterfront to be similar to the one in Chapala.
There are also plans to bring privately funded attractions to the area like airplane rides and a cruise boat to be docked in Ajijic. A Party type Ferry boat has already begun operations from Jocotepec.
The Major is ready to try and convince the Mexican State of Jalisco powers to be to fund the Ajijic waterfront improvements to the tune of 2.3 Million pesos or approximately $230,000 USD.
In the mean time, the work continues along Chapala’s shoreline. Final touches are now being put on the new tourist information center and tented plaza located at the west end of the Malecon on the former site of the old post office less than a block from my office in Chapala.
Chapala Club wishes the Major and all those involved in making the improvements in Chapala and Ajijic all the best. This will make our wonderful area even more beautiful and attractive to visitors and translate into more jobs for the local people as well.
