“Somethings Fishy at Lake Chapala !”
July 3, 2008

We've all heard the proverb "Give a man a fish and you fed him for a day, but teach him to fish and you've fed him for a lifetime." Well, Dr. Maria Elenan Echerveste, a local Lake Chapala Doctor, has a new twist on this basic idea. She has started a local program called "Teach a Woman to Raise a Fish" and she can help feed her family and make a profit. Dr. Elenan started the project by setting up several fish tanks in the Riberas del Pilar area at Lake Chapala where she lives. She is teaching the local women how to raise fingerlings purchased from a fishery in Jamay and housed in the tanks until they grow from just a few ounces to over a pound in just four months. The baby fish, like their human contemporaries must be fed every 2 hours from 8 am until 4 pm daily. The figerlings cost approx 70 cents each and can later be sold for about $4.50 USD per 2.2 pounds. The Talapia breed was chosen as they grow fast and are disese resistant. ChapalaClub salutes Dr. Elenan and the great work she's doing to help local ladies help to feed their families with high quality protein so often lacking among the poor in Mexico and at the same time making a profit. Another bonus is since the tanks are located not far from where the ladies live they do not need transportation to get to their work and are close by for their children. You might say that they are "Having Their Fish and Eating them too !".
