Rodents and Mosquitos are no more a problem here than other parts of the world. Our gardeners typically control garden pests and there are services that can handle household pests. A friend who visited from Hawaii once told me, “Sid, you guys have all the same beautiful weather plants, flowers and trees we have in Hawaii, but without the humidity and bugs.”

I am considering a semi-annual life in Ajijic/Lake Chapala. Are there many single women in their 50′s and 60′s? Does it seem mostly a couple’s world?
After an 8-year marriage, I am looking into options.

I may be renting a house in June. What is the weather like? Are rodents and mosquitoes a problem?

You can open a business here, but unless you can convince the authorities that no Mexican is qualified to do the work of the business “cleaning teeth” then you could not work as an employee of your own business, but only over see it as an owner.

Convincing the athorities would be very difficult to do here since there are a whole bunch of Bi lingual dentists that practice here and charge just $25 USD to clean teeth.

You could try to work under the wire, but I think you would soon be found out and asked to leave and not return.

Since we already have so many dentists here doing this I feel fairly certain someone would no doubt complain.

Sorry to be the bearer of such news. Are there other things you might be able to do here with a lot less competition such that you could open a business and hire yourself correctly stating there was not a qualified Mexican to do the work of the business ?

Many North Americans find something they can do on line and earn income from home this way.

The government only allows a certain number of foreign Real Estate Agents to work here, but so far most of us have survived year to year with the argument that we understand our culture and are of the same age as our buyers etc.

But they still limit the number of us that are authorized to be Realtors here.

I have been researching Lake Chapala and area as a possible semi-retirement location for my husband and myself. I would still like to work there as I am only 53. I’m a dental hygienist from the Toronto, Canada area. What would I need to do to work there? Could I work for myself? Could I set up in my home?
After reading every website I think you are the man to go to.
