A Tour of the Chapala Central Market
October 20, 2008

Let’s take a tour of the Chapala Central Market today.
I always enjoy visiting the market as it’s so full of life, color, interesting smells, and is the perfect place to observe and interact with the local people.
The market is a short walk from my office on Hidalgo street in central Chapala and so I go there several times a week to eat lunch, get a shoe shine ($ 1.00 USD) , or to pick up some fresh fruit or produce to take home.
I often run into other ExPats (usually having lunch at one of the numerous sidewalk cafés ringing the central market) and I enjoy getting to know the “regulars”.
Another past time for me is “people watching”. Since I’m married to a Mexican lady I already have an insight into the culture, language, and customs of the people here, but I can always learn more.
Living and working (if you can call what I do work) in a small town atmosphere and in general adjusting to a slower pace of life has been good for me… and I find that this is a common event for most expats who come to live here.
On this trip to the market I briefly met an Ex Pat I had not known before shopping for produce and we had a short chat and he’s very typical of how people feel who live here full time.
You will notice that he has a big smile on his face all the while we chatted.
Wouldn’t that be the way you’d like to live the rest of your life… with a big smile on your face everyday !
So, sit back, relax, take about five minutes from your currently busy day to go with me for a walk and talk around the Chapala Central Market.
Siempre tu amigo, Sid
