What’s the Connection between Jack Nicklaus and the New Condo Tower At Lake Chapala?

June 23, 2010

Ok, ponder the headline a while and I’ll reveal the connection in a moment, but first watch this short video of this outstanding property.

Now check out the description in the words of the seller’s agent.

“Strategically located nearby Ajijic, within short walking distance of malls, restaurants and even a Golf Course. EL DORADO offers you detached Villas and luxury vertical condos, in a secure residential development, featuring the most extensive Five Star Amenities of its class at Chapala Lakeside.

You can play a friendly tennis game, take a dive in its large heated infinity pool, or relax in the ample jacuzzi while enjoying the views. Working out in its fully equipped fitness center is also an option, followed by a soothing massage in the spa.

There are various decks and terraces for quality “me time”, and a spacious club house with pool tables, lounges with wireless internet access, a stage, and a kitchen for fun social events.

At El Dorado you will enjoy an attractive blend of tasteful architecture and activity oriented facilities, in a manicured landscaped setting surrounded by inspiring views of Lake Chapala and the Sierra Madre Mountains.

Imagine living a never ending vacation in one of the best climates in the world ! Every Day….”

OK, here’s the connection. The condo tower is situated on a site that once was the location of “El Oso Dorado” or the “Golden Bear” golf driving range named obviously for golfing great Jack Nicklaus.

I thought is was clever of the developers to tie the project name to the name for the old driving range. Just by dropping the word ‘oso” (‘bear’ from the name the property went by for many years they came up with “El Dorado”  (‘the golden one’ or ‘the gilded one’).

The current structure is still not finished but from all appearance it will be done before the end of the year.

Here’s the floor plan ( 2,421 sq. ft.) of one listed for sale at $350,719 USD.

Now here’s the description of this upper floor unit.

Oh, yes, I almost forgot to tell you the connection between Jack Nicklaus and El Dorador.. The El Dorodo complex is built on what was once El Oso Dorado golf driving range or “The Golden Bear” driving range. Of course JAck Nicklaus’ nick name is “The Golden Bear”

“Residential Description

To each his own and all that, but does this sort of development really belong in Ajijic village? To me, it seems to represent a different lifestyle and attitude — not necessarily bad, but more appropriate in some other Mexican locales.

Hi Dan, Thanks for your comments. I guess the marketplace will decide ultimately if Lake Chapala is ready for this kind of development.

Not sure how well sales are going over at El Dorado, but suspect they will pick up once the project is completed.

The world grows smaller with each passing day. Ajijic was once a poor, but no doubt happy, sleepy fishing village when the first North American retirees founded the Lake Chapala Society over half a century ago.

Thanks again for sharing your thoughts. Sid
