Fear at Lake Chapala Ajijic?
July 9, 2010

Ever been so scared you can’t move? It’s a common reaction to a really scary situation. We know we’re in trouble. We know we need to move. But, we can’t seem to convince ourselves, so we do nothing. Some people make a living helping others out of tight spots like this. Firefighters and police officers are trained in how to persuade people immobilized by fear to move , with reassurance that moving is necessary. Here’s how they do it. The firefighter or officer quickly establishes trust, speaks firmly with authority, but calmly, gives very clear and specific instructions on exactly what to do, and is there to help them to do it.. As a Police officer in Dallas for 35 years, I’ve done this numerous times. And, in a way, I’m giving similar help and reassurance now on how best to make a decision if the Lake Chapala area might be right for my clients. That there’s no need to fear the area, but there is a need to look inside themselves and think through the decision making process. Not that deciding if our area is right for you is as scary as being trapped in a burning building … but there are surprising similarities. Sometimes our clients are hesitating, unsure, and perhaps even a little afraid of making a bad choice. We understand. Information alone is not persuasive Imagine you’re trapped in a burning building. Now imagine I come over and simply tell you a few logical reasons you should move.
- Fire is dangerous.
- The fumes being produced are very unhealthy.
- The building’s structure may fall in if the fire weakens the support columns.
Obviously, these are all very good reasons to move. But, it doesn’t help break your fear-based paralysis. Good reasons alone are just not enough. So, the Dream Team and I recognize that often our clients want to take the big step to move here, but quite frankly are a bit afraid. We realize that our client’s fears are valid, normal, and causing tension. You see we’ve been through the process ourselves and so we understand.
We’re patient, understanding and helpful in a lot of ways anddo much more than than just give you the facts . We can be Joe Friday and give you “Just the facts mam.” If that’s all you want. But, most of us need a bit more. We need someone to empathize with us, to understand our fears, and then give us the tools to overcome them. So, the Dream team does a lot more than just give you the facts. We share our lives and experiences with you, ( both good and bad) about living here, so you will avoid the mistakes we made and benefit from the smart things we did as well. If we had a great Realtor, then we recall how helpful that was to us and now it’s our turn to give back. If on the other hand we had one that was less than empathetic we remember how that made us feel, and promise you we will never make you feel that way. So, no need to be afraid. Thousands have come before you and thousands more are coming. But please don't leave your common sense at home. We expect a healthy bit of skepticism. We understand that you’ve seen the gorgeous photographs, read the stories of living luxuriously on a pension, and heard about the unbelievable low taxes… We expect you to make us prove it to you. (It’s all true by the way.) But, we want to do more, much more. We want to pull back the curtain and let you see how real folks really live here. So, what are your fears about living here? Crime? Political Stability? Acceptance by the locals? Having to learn Spanish? Poor Medical Care? Missing the Grand kids? Being Homesick? Making Friends and Fitting in?
