"http" & "https" – Do YOU Know The Difference ?

What’s the difference between “http” and “https” ?
The main difference between http:// and https:// HTTP stands for Hyper Text Transfer Protocol

The S stands for "Secure".  If you visit a website or web page, and look at the address in the web browser, it will likely begin with http://.

This means that the website is talking to your browser using the regular 'unsecured language. In other words, it is possible for someone to "eavesdrop" on your computer's conversation with the website.

If you fill out a form on the website, someone might see the information you send to that site.

This is why you should never enter your credit card number in an http website!

But, if the web address begins with https://, that basically means your computer is talking to the website in a secure code that no one can eavesdrop on.

So, If a website ever asks you to enter your credit card information, you should automatically look to see if the web address begins with https://.

If it doesn't, you should NEVER enter sensitive information…such as a credit card number, SS # etc.

Thanks to my friend Jim B, in Dallas for this great info.

I’m online a lot and don’t recall seeing http”s” much, or ordering from them. Is it very widely used? Another safety measure is to just open a Paypal account- it’s free, easy and totally safe and secure within their website and it’s the most commonly used payment processor in the US at least. With your payment info already on their site you don’t have to divulge it to the company you’re purchasing from. Originally introduced by Ebay as their processor. https://paypal.com
    THEY have an s!

Hi Sophia, Yes, I’ve used Pay Pal for several years.

Now when I order anything on line I just check that the “s” is included before I enter sensitive information. Just a double check to be sure the site is secure.

Thanks for your comments. Tu amigo, Sid
