Shopping Online from Lake Chapala, Mexico

March 9, 2011

I love living at Lake Chapala, Mexico, but I do miss browsing in the large bookstores in the USA. Yes, I’m a book nut.

We do have a nice English language book store in Ajijic and they even stock a best seller book called “Wake Up…Live the Life You Love: Living in the Now” compiled by Steven E. & Lee Beard in which I’m a contributing author.

I’m working now on a new book. A book all about what else, Living, Working and Playing at Lake Chapala, Mexico…but I digress.

Getting back to my story…The Lake Chapala Society in Ajijic also has a large English language library all indexed on computer and everything, but the trouble for me is, “They expect me to bring them back their books after reading.”

You see I’m one of those readers who like a fresh new book or a clean used one because I like to underline, make margin notes and use my highlighter on important passages.

Then, I go back, review my notes, and on occasion make a recording of my notes to listen to, so I can take the meat from the book and consume it for my mental nourishment.

Yes, I know about Kindle and the other tablet book readers and while I probably will buy one when one surfaces as the best, I love the real McCoy.

So, I go shopping on Amazon.com a lot. They get to know you and suggest books you might like, let you read a significant part of the book you’re interested in, and offer free shipping if you sign up for their credit card.

I’ve also found that Amazon and many of their affiliate booksellers will ship to Lake Chapala Mexico.

So far, I’ve not paid a single peso in duty. They come right to my office door and one of the secretaries accepts them for me (Thanks Jenny and Eva) and puts them on my desk.

International shipping rates are a bit more, but well worth the savings in gasoline, time, and convenience than driving to Guadalajara … and instead of hundreds of books in English I have my pick of many thousands.
