Take 2 Minutes to Relax with a Walk Around Chapala, Mexico

Hi Everyone.

Let's take a mini tour of downtown Chapala, Jalisco, Mexico thru the magic of Internet video.

There's something about water, especially like large bodies of it like Lake Chapala, which is the largest lake in Mexico, and may even be the largest South of the Great Lakes.

    Is it recommended to drive from US to Chapala-we are in our 70′s-and we will be living in Phoenix during the winter. Would like to be able to drive to Chapala with 2 dogs during the Phoenix summer. email norris7875@live.com We currently live in Boquete, Panama.

    Hi Glen, Thanks for your post.

    You can drive here from North America in safety
    if you use common sense, don’t drive at night,
    use a good map (l like the Guia Roji maps.

    I use the 8.5 x 11 spiral bound version as it lays
    flat on a table and the print is larger for my old eyes.

    Never drive at night if you can avoid it more to avoid
    road hazards than bad guys. Easy to get lost or miss
    a sign or not see a road hazard in time to avoid it when
    driving at night.

    Good roads most of the way from all the major
    routes here from the USA. Most people use the
    toll roads (recommended by the US State Dept.)

    Tolls run about $100 USD, but have pesos to pay
    as the exchange rate if they will even accept
    dollars will not be good.

    I’d be interested in your experiences in Panama
    when we get together here. I’ve never been there,
    but know a lot of Americans have tried it out.

    Very few people move on after experiencing
    Lake Chapala since it has so much of what
    most North Americans want.

    Let me know of any questions you might
    have and I’ll do my best to answer them.

    Sid I love your videos and of course I LOVE the lake, but I seldom see photos of the a Plaza or El Centro of Jardin that one sees in most small Mexican cities.  I ask because I want to live in a area where I can walk everywhere for groceries, restaurants, etc. I don’t want to have to rely on my car to get around.  Living in a walk-able community is part of the reason I need to escape the US.  I live in the “suburbs” where one could die of starvation without a car: no buses, cabs or no stores within walking distance, unless you are into hiking several miles. Could you do a video of the towns of Ajijic, Chapala and Jocotepec showing the shops, restaurants and other amenities?

    HI Glen, The Lake is a big catch basin for the rains that run off from the surrounding mountains. So the Lake is dependent on rain fall. It’s always gaining and or losing water. In 1998 it was very low and you could walk out on dry land past the lighthouse at the end of the pier.

    Today boats are tied up all along the pier and we have two ferries operating on the Lake. It’s a bit down now, but if we get a good rainy season which is just starting it will significantly recover. Thanks ofr asking, Tu amigo, Sid

     My advise is of course to use common sense. Do NOT drive at night. Use the toll roads. Driving at night is dangerous not because of bad guys but for unmarked road hazards, more easy to miss a sign, get lost etc.

    I recommend staying in the NO Tell motels since they are always spotless, and you need minimal Spanish. Once you pay and drive into the complex you use the remote overhead garage door clicker they give you to open the garage
    associated with your room.

    You drive inside and click again and you and your car are tucked in safely.

    A short half flight of stairs will lead to a very nice room. One warning. The cable TV will likely have a porno channel.
