Are You Artistic.. Or Do You Just Love Art ?
If you’re the least bit artistic you’re going to fall in love with Ajijic, Mexico.
I once was a fine art major so count me in as an art lover. I’ve lived here for many years, but I still enjoy walking around Ajijic, visiting the Lake Chapala Society to check out the bulletin board there too see what’s going on throughout the area, check out a book from one of 30,000 some odd titles, or perhaps renting a video or two for the weekend from hundreds of videos in English.
I recently picked up a copy of the “Ajijic Society of the Arts” magazine and I counted 63 listings of shops that sell art of all types from paintings to handicrafts and just about everything in between.
In some of the shops you will meet the artists themselves. A few have studios that open right onto the cobble stone lanes near the central plaza.
Of course there are other interesting shops and small coffee bars, intimate restaurants, ice cream parlors, and the beautiful central plaza complete with hand painted murals, the Cultural center, hand carved wood sculptures  and even the police station on the corner is adorned with a colorful tiled mural.
The Central Ajijic plaza and the surround neighborhood is great for shopping, sightseeing, an intimate lunch, a cup of gourmet coffee or just people watching.
Best to avoid the weekend, because the area will be crowded with Tapitios (people from Guadalajara) who are escaping Guadalajara for a day or two.
By the way we include Ajijic and the Lake Chapala Society as part of our free get acquainted tour. So, if you’re planning a trip to our area send me an e mail to, because I look forward to showing you Ajijic and more of our beautiful area.
