Why Lake Chapala is Likely Right for You!

March 6, 2013

(I took this morniing sunrise from my home at Lake Chapala)
Drawn by the fact that Lake Chapala Mexico is close enough to drive to (easy to have a car here if you feel the need for one), and just a few hours from US Gateway Airports. (Dallas is under 3 hours away), has near-perfect weather and a substantially lower cost of living, my clients find that Lake Chapala is perfect for them.
Before they left the States, many told me their friends didn’t understand their decision. They asked, "What are you going to do there?"
There’s no pressure to DO, anything here, but with so many wonderful restaurants, the Lake Chapala Society with its 20,000 plus book library and beautiful grounds, video club, Spanish lessons for those who feel the need, art fairs and monthly events, plus over 50 North American groups, and our two multi screen cinemas (Almost all in English with Spanish subtitles) there’s no shortage of things to do.
The Lake activities appeal to many with sailing, water skiing, the Kayak Club, and more all at our doorstep.
Want to give back, There are many ways to do that as well. Teach English (no credential needed) to Mexican people eager to learn our language, numerous local charities in need of volunteers, like the “Love in Action” group, to aid the less fortunate, the “Have Hammers, Will Travel” group which teaches Mexican young people basic carpentry skills, and many others.
Like to travel? Lake Chapala is in the heart of Colonial Mexico and is surrounded by a treasure trove of interesting places to visit, like San Miguel de Allende, Aguas Caliente, Leon, and Zacatecas all just a day drive away.
Love the ocean” Mazanillo and Puerto Vallarta are just a day or less drive away.
Oh, and don’t forget we’re just under an hour drive to the second largest city in Mexico, the booming capital of our state of Jalisco, Guadalajara.
Guadalajara and it’s 4.4 million inhabitants have all the charms of a vibrant big city with museums, a world famous zoo, a symphony orchestra, world class restaurants and the famous Ballet Folkloric Dance group.
And, if you’re a guy reading this, you may not want to tell your better half about a slew of world class malls in Guadalajara.
And, Ladies you may want to keep this a secret form your other half too, there’s even an entire mall devoted to ladies shoes.
I’ve learned to “park myself at the food court” with a good book and a cup of Starbucks while my better half shops for bargains and clothing treasures.
Now, someone is saying, “Sid, That’s all well and good, but I just want to take it easy, I’m not into a lot of activities. Don’t worry, there’s no pressure to be a joiner, doer, or social butterfly.
After all, retirement life is all about doing what you want to do, when you want to do it.
You may want to invest in one of the handmade hammocks for sale here to string up in your garden to just soak up the warm days and watch the humming birds in your garden between naps.
The truth is that even on a relatively small pension you should be able to live out your years in comfort with as much or as little social and intellectual stimulation as you want.
I seriously doubt if you hit the lottery jackpot (we have those too) that you would dramatically improve your lifestyle over living here at Lake Chapala on your pension and/or your investments.
