“Dallas police chief addresses third rape in Lake Highlands; lockdowns lifted at 12 schools”

Hi, This startling headline recently appeared in a Dallas Newspaper. As a former Dallas Police Officer and former resident of the Lake Highlands area  it struck home with me.

It made me feel horrible for my friends that still live in this beautiful upscale area of North Dallas that I used to call home.

It also made me put into perspective the crime we have at Lake Chapala. Relatively speaking, the North American ExPat community has been very fortunate to have experienced a relatively low level of violent personal attacks. Should we pat ourselves on the back?

No, we should always be vigil and use common sense. Do not resist for example an armed robbery. Cooperate. Focus on remembering the perps description. Immediately report the crime. Program your cell phone with the local police emergency number. Beef up security at you home. Don’t broadcast that you will be out of town, except to trusted neighbors to keep watch.

In other words use common sense.

As a former uniformed Lt. Commander Patrol and later as the Commander of the Crime Scene Search section (the forensic guys) I often went to the scene of murders, rapes and armed robberies to aid the investigations.  I know we had a good police force then in Dallas and I believe we still do, so I’m not blaming the Police Dept. at all, nor the newspapers for their screaming headlines as distasteful as they sometimes are.  By publishing the artist’s sketch they are helping.

As a former cop I can tell you that most officers are doing the best they can to prevent crime and I believe that’s the case in Mexico as well. It also is important to say “Thanks” as often as you can to the officers that help to keep us safe.

Yes, hold them accountable via the proper channels, but also take the time to say, “Thanks”. (Gracias por tu servicio).

Finally, Don’t live in fear here at Lake Chapala or anywhere, but live in the knowledge that evil does exist and then do your part to defeat it.

Be safe ! Siempre tu amigo, Sid
