Family Fun at Lake Chapala

May 15, 2013

Hi, I often get asked if you can swim in Lake Chapala.

I explain that both the government and environmentalists have declared

Lake Chapala safe to swim in and to eat the fish.

The excellent video below shot by my friend Don Wright ( a friendly competitor) shows kids swimming in the shallow waters off the Chapala Malecon.

The water looks dirty. It’s just that the Lake has a natural soil bottom formed by centuries of rains eroding the surrounding mountains. I’ve never heard of anyone getting sick from swimming or eating the fish.

That being the said I rarely see North Americans either swimming or fishing the Lake. The Lake covers 417 square mile and is basically a catch basin for the rainy season run off from the surrounding mountains.

I also get asked about water activities. We have a local Kayak club. 2 marinas and from time to time I see someone water skiing or riding water bikes.

There are two pleasure barges that take tourists and retirees out for sight seeing on the Lake or trips to the South shore towns.

We’re blessed to have the Lake for many reasons. It serves as a habitat for various bird species, as a tourist draw for Mexican families from the surrounding towns and nearby Guadalajara which provides revenue for local businesses, it serves as a reservoir for domestic water use for nearby Guadalajara and of course along with the surrounding mountains provides the area with wonderful cool breezes in the summer and eliminates the need for AC in most cases.

Now, sit back and enjoy this great video called “Family Fun at Lake Chapala”,  But note, during the week we locals get the Lake pretty much all to ourselves,

Wow, look at how high the lake level was! Looking forward to the rains adding some water again… it’s so low right now. Good video of all the activity at the Chapala Malecon. It’s difficult to describe to those who haven’t been here how much activity there is on weekends.
