Hi Sid, I am hoping to be able to visit the Lake Chapala area next summer for 4 to 6 months. I would like to rent a room for a week or so and then look for suitable housing for the remainder of my visit. Do you have any suggestions? I would also like to either rent a bicycle or buy one while I am there as I will not have a vehicle. Is there a site that I could inquire about rentals during the summer months? Any information you can provide would be much appreciated. Thank you, Karen

  • Fred S.

Karen Gunier, I’ll let Sid respond more fully, but I wanted to say that you’ll be able to buy a used or new bike once you get here and decide if biking is the way you want to go. I’m not aware of any places for bike rentals in Ajijic (although there may be one). There are several small bike repair and resale shops here in San Juan Cosalá, where we live, so I’m sure there will be some in Ajijic as well.

Hi Karen, Thanks for your question. Fred did a good job of answering, but let me add a bot more. I do not know of any bike rentals, but we do have used bike shops,

I see Mexican workers riding their bikes to and from their work all the time. Great way to stay in shape and save money.. and easy to park.

Now a few words on rentals. Chapala (the city) would have the least expensive
rentals starting around $300 USD a mont and likely including water and sometimes gas, Usually there;s no land line phone, There are sometimes a Wi fi so an on line phone like Magic Jack could work.

As you move West toward Ajijic the prices will go up and the interior finishes will also be a cut above the rentals in Chapala. To find the rentals in Chapala (since most are not listed with a rental agency) you would walk the neighborhoods and look for small hand letter “se renta” signs in the windows or check the bulletin boards at WalMart and Suoper Lake.

Hope this helps. Give me a shout when you arrive and Can elaborate more.

All for now, Tu amigo, Sid

Hi Fred, Thank you for responding. I have been gone and just returned home. I am glad to know I will be able to find a bicycle when I get there. I want the bike for pleasure and biking around town so it is good to know I will be able to buy one. Any info you care to provide would be much appreciated.

Thanks again for responding and the information. Karen

Hi Sid, Thank you for responding. I have been gone and just returned home. Thanks for the information. I think I will find a room for a week or two and then look for a suitable long term rental for the remaining months. I would like to be close to the main shopping and entertainment areas. I figured I would be able to scout out a place upon arrival. I enjoy reading your blogs and all the information they provide to us northerners.
Thanks again for responding and the information. Karen
