Hi Everyone,
I was recently reviewing my living experience here at Lake Chapala – Ajijic, Mexico. I’ve lived here full time for a decade and it just keeps getting better.

The weather is not better, because how much better can it be, with year around spring like weather, mostly sunny days and low humidity at a mile high (like Denver).

The beautiful mountain and lake views are not better as great as they are The wild birds (like the the colorful humming birds that frequent our garden are not any more colorful or fun to watch this year than last.

My banana trees, the avocado tree, the pomegranate tree, the lemon – lime tree are not bearing better this year than last, the Rose garden is as beautiful and fragrant as always… so just how is my retirement here in paradise now 16% better?

Well it’s tax time, and as always I think more about finances this time of the year, and I realized that my pension dollars are buying approximately 16% more pesos than before while prices in pesos have not risen very much at all.

My gardener still earns 500 pesos a week (We have large yard), and so in effect I now am paying him 16% less in dollar terms. Our housekeeper earns 50 pesos an hour, But in dollar terms we’re paying her 16 % less as well.

My yearly taxes on my 2000 sq. ft plus home (3 full baths, 3 bedrooms, 2 car garage, plus storage rooms in a nice development under 2 miles from Chapala with great lake and mountain views this year came in at the peso equivalent of $100 USD. That’s about what I pay every year, so I did not save more than last year, but I think the valuation likely went up, but the better exchange rate at the same time allowed my dollars to buy more pesos than a year ago so in dollar terms my yearly property tax stayed the same.

Compare our cost of living, weather, and infrastructure with where you live now. Which is better?

Send me an e mail to Sid@ChapalaClub.com and ask me your questions about Life at Lake Chapala. I promise to “Tell it like it is.”

All for now, Siempre tu amigo, Sid

    Hi Sid,
I really enjoy reading your Chapala Club pages

I need some info about the south side of Lake Chapala, communities like Tuxcueca
Anything of interest for someone to search for residency in that area ?

    Hasta luego

    Hi Louis- Marie,

The South Side of Lake Chapala is much different, Spanish is much more important. The infrastructure is not as good. The views are comparable. The local folks are very nice.

Medical care and Emergency ambulance service is not as available, Etc, etc.

All of that being said, the few North American’s living on the South side seem to
like it just fine, Some make regular trips to our side of the Lake,

I know of no one on the South side that make regular trips to the South side,

No North American activities I’m aware of, no North American clubs etc.

I’m not knocking the South side, I’ve sold 3 homes on the near South side and the buyers have been happy with their lives there. So, the above statements are not so much criticism as “telling it like it is” .

Hope this helps, Siempre tu amigo, Sid

    Hello Sid !
    This statement….
My gardener still earns 500 pesos a week (We have large yard), and so in effect I now am paying him 16% less in dollar terms. Our housekeeper earns 50 pesos an hour, But in dollar terms we’re paying her 16 % less as well.

Just a suggestion. Your Gardener and housekeeper are probably aware that they are make 16% less too and may be struggling because of it-I dont know since I’m not there. I would give them back that SOME or all of that 16%;say in form of a “tip” showing your appreciation for all they do in making it such a great place to live … It could afford your workers a little extra luxury as well as you getting a 16% saving- WIN/WIN for all.
Again- just a suggestion. I am a BIG fan of paying it forward to others-tell you friends that are happy about there 16% savings too.
    Have a wonderful & blessed day/week!
