How Do I Get to Lake Chapala?

Hi Everyone,

Most people fly into Miguel Hidalgo International Airport. The symbol is GDL. We’re blessed to share the airport with approximately 5 million residents of Guadalajara.

The airport is located about mid point between Lake Chapala and Guadalajara and is about a 25 minute drive to Lake Chapala. No bus service from the airport, but there are plenty of special airport taxis available.

The airport has an abundance of car rental places (like you would expect) but I highly suggest that you not rent car at the airport. The fees sound attractive, but the insurance runs the rates up significantly.

In addition for the uninitiated driving at Lake Chapala can be a challenge (narrow streets, mostly parallel parking, unmarked one way streets, lack of street signs, etc.) If you are brave enough to rent a car good luck trying to find a place to park in Ajijic village.

And, if you do find a place to park be sure and fold in the outside rear view mirrors. Why? Because many of the streets  are so narrow that a big truck of bus could easily knock off the outside rear view mirror.

Big hassle and I suspect not cheap when you return you rent car

If after arriving by taxi or private airport pick up service  at Lake Chapala, you decide you still want to try a rental car,  we have a nice family run car rental place located on the main East West highway in Ajijic.

You likely can walk to lots of things from your hotel or B and B.

Taxi’s are also inexpensive, plentiful, and courteous. You will find taxi stands on the Ajijic Plaza, the Chapala Plaza, and in front of Wal Mart.

All for now. Siempre tu amigo, Sid
