“Mexican Beer Drinker’s Alert !”

July 3, 2008

Old Watering Hole gets a new lease on life.

The “Beer Garden” restaurant – bar which was a famous watering hole in the 1060s and 1970s is undergoing renovation on the Lake Chapala waterfront.

Ricardo Reyes heads the new management and he’s spent the last 6 months and several million pesos to remodel the landmark facility.

For you history buffs the original “Beer Garden” was opened in 1925, Then in 1941 the business came into the possession of Luis and Roberto Cuevas and eventually Luis bought out his brother and he and his wife Natalia Gomez built the business up until it was Chapala’s most popular tourist place and the location for all sorts of community social events.

In the 1950s when the Lake expereinced a severe drought Natalia somehow kept the business in operation while her husband went on the road as a traveling salesman to support his 8 children.

Then in the 1960s and 1970s the Beer Garden came into its own as mentioned above and it looks like its on its way again.

The original building will have undergone a total renovation, but a series of murals that have adorned the walls from the 1950s will be saved and the restaurant menu will have some of the old popular dishes on the new menu as well, like Caviar de Chapala, an appetizer made from carp roe and Caldo Michi, a tasty catfish stew.

The new hours will be from Noon to 10 PM Sunday thru Thursday and on Fridays and Saturdays there will be live music and closing times are extended until Midnight.

We wish the New and Improved “Lake Chapala Beer Garden” great success.
